Tesla Inc. CEO Elon Musk thinks that the number of humanoid robots in the world will exceed the human population one day, skewing the ratio in favor of these machines.
What Happened: During a game streaming session on X, formerly Twitter, Musk voiced his thoughts on the future of humanity which will also include humanoid robots.
"I think, long-term… the ratio of humanoid robots will be more than one-to-one. So, there probably might be two humanoid robots, or more, maybe 10, for every one human," Musk said during the streaming session.
Later, in a post, he further underscored that humanoid robots could outnumber humans one day.
"It comes down to what you think the ratio of humanoid robots to humans will be. My guess is that it will be >>1."

Tesla itself has a humanoid robot project currently in the works, but it's not the only prominent one out there.

Here are some of the top humanoid robot projects under development right now:
1. Boston Dynamics Atlas
Atlas is a bipedal humanoid robot created by Boston Dynamics, an American robotics company, with support and funding from the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).
Originally intended for various search and rescue missions, Atlas was introduced to the public on July 11, 2013. In April, the hydraulic version of Atlas (HD Atlas) was retired. The next day, a new fully electric version was announced.
2. Tesla Optimus
Optimus, also referred to as Tesla Bot, is a general-purpose humanoid robot currently under development. It was unveiled at the company’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) Day event in August 2021, and a prototype was revealed in 2022.
In 2022, Musk expressed his belief that Optimus “has the potential to be more significant than [Tesla’s] vehicle business over time.” He also thinks Optimus could be available by the end of next year.
3. Agility Robotics Digit
Digit is a humanoid robot designed for dynamic movement, equipped with two legs and various sensors to navigate complex environments, making it suitable for logistics and human-designed buildings.
Agility Robotics has partnered with Amazon to test human-like robotic solutions at its R&D site, where Digit will initially assist with the repetitive task of tote recycling, working collaboratively with employees.
4. 1X Robotics Neo
Neo, developed by 1X Robotics, marks a significant leap in humanoid robot design, tailored for household chores and manual tasks. Its bipedal humanoid form, human-like hands, and versatility in handling various tasks highlight Neo's potential to transform daily life.
5. Jia Jia
Jia Jia, China’s first humanoid robot, developed by a research team at the University of Science and Technology of China over three years, can hold simple conversations, move her arms, and make various facial expressions.
Notably, her eyes can move freely around the room, and her lip movements are nearly perfectly synced with her speech, enhancing her lifelike interactions.
6. Figure AI
Figure AI introduced its humanoid robot, Figure 01. This advanced humanoid incorporates OpenAI technology, bringing conversational skills and diverse functionalities to the table.
7. Nvidia Project GR00T
Nvidia Corp.'s Project GR00T is a foundational AI model for humanoid robots. It aims to enable robots to understand natural language and mimic human actions. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang highlighted humanoid robotics as the next evolution and an item that could be more useful in the future.
